Also worth noting is that the app update is likely going to show up in the beta version of the app first. Which means it isn’t going to be ready for stable for at least a little while. If you’re on the beta version of the app though, Google may start rolling this feature out in the weeks ahead. Keep in mind that app update rollouts can still take days before they reach all users. So once the rollout does begin, not all users will get it the same day.
Google Maps will show routes that are better for EVs
The new feature in question will allow Maps to show routes that are more energy efficient. Which in turn should allow for less stops to charge up the car. It’s not too unlike routes that may provide a quicker trip. Though since gas stations are virtually everywhere and charging stations are more sparse, it definitely seems like something that’s needed. Given the growing amount of electric vehicles that are starting to hit the road. The details about this new feature were uncovered by 9To5Google, which found strings of code in the latest beta APK that mention the changes. According to those mentions, the app will show routes that are “more fuel efficient” based on engine type. Users will be able to note their engine type as part of navigation. Maps will then deliver routes that are more efficient on the fuel. So, this will cater to those with hybrid engines as well as regular fuel and diesel engines. Based on the wording choosing an engine type won’t be something you need to do. But you can do it if you want more fuel/energy efficient routes.
